business how I spend my money, but guess what? This baby cost $150,000. Chew on that!”
I put my arm around Brooke. “Let it go. She’ll regret buying the stupid thing, and you’ve spoken the truth.” I brushed the hair away from her reddened face.
“Mom shouldn’t have left her a dime. She’s never tapped into her God-given potential and has always been financially reckless. Unbelievable.” She exhaled dramatically. “Nothing’s ever boring with her, is it?”
“Speak up, guys!” Ashley yelled from her topless Italian sports car. “I can’t hear your rude private conversation!” The capricious blonde shook her head and pressed back into a leather bucket seat embroidered with the Ferrari emblem. The roaring sounds of a revved engine merely set the stage. Smoke and squealing erupted as she spun the exotic ride backward off the driveway.
Darting onto Foothill Road, the right rear portion of her dream car slammed into the front right fender of a sturdy Waste Management refuse truck. The sounds of locked-up wheels and scents of burned rubber were instantly and forever embedded in every witness’s mind.
Most of The Emerald Cross is nonstop edge-of-the-seat action. The backstories are important and add a dose of levity to an intense adventure.
